Howard James Gray

Music Producer and founder member of [a5129].
Born July 15th, 1962, Sydney, Australia.
Howard Gray grew up in Liverpool, England. During his final year at school his interest in music and sound recording landed him a job as 'Tape Op' at Richard Branson's residential country estate, The Manor Studio. His progression to assistant sound engineer, and then engineer, both at The Manor and Branson's newly completed Townhouse Studio in London's Hammersmith, saw him working with [a66302], [a18547], [a15118], [a12340], [a9462], [a7871], [a101028], [a23036], [a21767], [a92991], [a85929], [a255411] and many more. One of the producers Gray engineered for most frequently was [a50809], who encouraged him to go freelance.
In 1983 [a21767] asked him to help produce "Labour Of Love", their best-selling album of Reggae covers. [a24167], [a148725], [a28972], [a26522], [a46764], [a203388], [a475443], [a92582], [a211771], [a57375] and [a4063] are some of the artists he worked with over the next decade.
Always keen to explore available technology Gray was an early fan of the [url=http://www.vintagesynth.com/sci/studio440.php]Sequential Circuits Studio 440[/url], considered by many to be the grandfather of sequencing/sampling/drum and music making machines. With [a24172], in 1987, Gray was one of the first to use the machine to create an entire album.
In 1990, together with his brother [a50808] and old school friends [a366078] and [a271075], Howard Gray formed [a5129], with whom he has released four albums, three UK Top 10 singles, and a further eight Top 40 singles. As in-demand remixers Apollo 440 and their alter ego [a66579] have worked their magic over 60 times for artists such as [a6520], [a7161], [a5116], [a24711] and [a15900]. With Apollo 440, Gray has collaborated with [a209415], [a49624] and [a266138], recorded various film soundtracks, and worked on a number of Sony Playstation games. Apollo 440 will release their fifth album, "The Future's What It Used To Be" in late 2010.
In addition to his role with Apollo 440, the 21st century has seen Gray add more outside production credits to his extensive CV, working with the likes of [a255294], [a109948], [a308550] and [a1170977]. He has recently completed production of the debut album by Josh Bray, and looks forward to collaborating on his fourth F.A. Cup single for Liverpool F.C.
