Frederick Riddle (1912–1995) was a prominent British violist, one of the brightest performers of the British viola school alongside with [a=Lionel Tertis] and [a=William Primrose] whose traditions are continued today by [a=Lawrence Power (2)] and other modern violists. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1980. Fred Riddle graduated from the [l=Royal College of Music, London] in 1933 and started his career both as a solo performer and with [a=The London Symphony Orchestra] (1933–38). He was appointed Principal Viola of the [a=The London Philharmonic Orchestra] in 1938. Riddle had been working as a professor at RCM from 1948, and joined [a=The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra] in 1953.
