Born on 13th March 1942, Hanceville, Alabama, U.S.A.
She was married to [a=Clarence Carter] (1970 - 1973) and [a=John Sussewell] (1980 - 1998, along whom she co-founded the gospel label ([l=Beracah Records])). Mother of [a=Cassandra Hightower] and the drummer [a=Marcus Williams (2)]. Her biggest hits are [i]"You Got The Love"[/i] (With [a=The Source (7)]), the anthemic all time classic [i]"Young Hearts Run Free"[/i] and the southern soul renditions of [a=Tammy Wynette]'s [i]"Stand By Your Man"[/i] as well as [i]"In The Ghetto[/i], the classic that [a=Elvis Presley] made famous. Outstanding are her renditions of [a=Bee Gees]' [i]"Nights On Broadway"[/i] and [a=Elvis Presley]'s [i]"Suspicious Minds"[/i]. She released eleven soul and disco albums from 1970 to 1982, thirteen gospel albums from 1983 to 2002, her most modern, club-friendly [i]"Outside In"[/i] (1999) and in the mid-00's she made her soul comeback via [a=Damon Albarn]'s [l=Honest Jon's Records] with two deep rootsy soul albums.
